June 12: Abacha’s family slams IBB’s claim on annulment

The family of the late General Sani Abacha has responded to claims made by former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, regarding the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. Babangida, in his autobiography, expressed regret over the annulment, attributing the decision to military officers, including Abacha. However, Abacha’s family refuted these claims, stating that Abacha was not in the top leadership positions during that period.

The family criticized Babangida for attempting to distort historical facts and shift blame, emphasizing that the decision to annul the election was made under Babangida’s administration. They cautioned against revisionist narratives that aim to manipulate public perception for personal or political gains.

The family urged Nigerians to be cautious of such narratives and emphasized that the memory of General Sani Abacha should not be tarnished by baseless accusations. They criticized Babangida’s autobiography for not providing an honest and objective account of past events, highlighting the importance of honesty, sincerity, and integrity in historical narratives.
