The Academic Staff Union of Universities at Gombe State University has initiated an indefinite strike due to the state government’s failure to meet their demands. The union’s demands include the implementation of the 2021 Memorandum of Action, increased funding for the university, payment of Earned Academic Allowances, provision of training for academic staff, and other issues.
During a press briefing after a congress meeting, Dr. Suleiman Jauro, the branch Chairman, expressed disappointment with the lack of attention from the government towards their efforts. He highlighted the accumulation of Earned Academic Allowances over several years and the challenges faced by staff due to inadequate funding and poor working conditions.
The union emphasized that they have been enduring challenging working conditions for a long time, citing inadequate funding, non-implementation of agreements, and salary discrepancies in Nigerian universities. Despite seeking intervention from eminent individuals in the state, the government’s failure to address the issues forced the union to proceed with a comprehensive and indefinite strike.
In their message to students and parents, the union urged understanding and support while calling on the government to take appropriate action.
