Kaduna gov backs creation of Gurara State – SOKAPU

The Southern Kaduna Peoples Union has refuted claims suggesting opposition from the Kaduna State Governor towards the establishment of Gurara state from the current Kaduna State. The National President of SOKAPU, Samuel Tabara-Kato, expressed that Governor Sani’s administration has been supportive of the Gurara state creation. Addressing a press conference in Kaduna, Kato urged Southern Kaduna to trust in Governor Sani’s inclusive governance approach.

Highlighting that state creation is a constitutional right rather than a conflict, Kato emphasized the importance of respecting this right. He outlined that Gurara State, which would encompass 12 local government areas abundant in agricultural and mineral resources, is viable as an independent entity. SOKAPU has initiated a committee to submit a formal request to the National Assembly for state creation, requiring community endorsement.

Kato clarified that the governor’s alleged lack of support for Gurara State is misinformation, as evidence points to the contrary. He encouraged unity among the people and emphasized the backing of elite and traditional leaders in the region for the new state. With the House Committee on Constitution Review accepting proposals for state creation, SOKAPU is refining its proposition to align with constitutional standards.

Southern Kaduna residents were urged to maintain peace and engage with stakeholders constructively on this matter. Recent discussions by the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review included the proposal for 31 new states, including Gurara state, which, if approved, would increase Nigeria’s sub-national governments to 67.
