The Kano State House of Assembly has set up a seven-man committee to investigate the recent demolition of over 500 shops at Rano market in the Rano Local Government Area. The decision came after a motion was raised by a member representing Rano Constituency, expressing concerns about the impact of the demolition on local traders and the community.
The assembly was urged to intervene and look into the circumstances surrounding the demolition, which was described as “unfortunate.” The member highlighted the economic hardships faced by the affected traders who lost their source of income without adequate notice or compensation.
In response, the Speaker of the House directed the formation of a committee to investigate the matter. The committee, chaired by the Deputy Speaker, will determine the reasons for the demolition, examine the process followed, and recommend actions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The demolition, which occurred last week, led to protests from market traders and residents, with calls for compensation and relocation of the affected individuals. The committee is expected to submit its findings within a week.
