The governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has expressed his appreciation for the committee in charge of distributing school uniforms to primary school pupils. The committee returned ₦100 million of unspent funds from the ₦2 billion allocated for the project.
During the distribution of 798,000 school uniforms for Primary One pupils at the Kano Government House, Yusuf praised the committee’s integrity, highlighting it as a reflection of the transparency and accountability in his administration.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa, on Tuesday, Yusuf commended the committee, led by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Tajo Othman, for their honesty and patriotism.
The governor acknowledged that despite the opportunity to misuse the excess funds, the committee’s ethical values led them to return the money to the government for further projects.
Yusuf also lauded the quality of the uniforms provided and assured the public that the program would become an annual initiative. Additionally, he announced plans to distribute computers to secondary schools across the state to enhance students’ digital literacy skills for future opportunities.
In a call to action, the governor urged affluent individuals and corporate organizations to support government initiatives in improving the education sector. He emphasized that even small contributions could have a significant impact on transforming lives.
During the event, the Chairman of Kano State Nigerian Union of Teachers, Baffa Garko, commended the governor’s dedication to enhancing education and pledged the union’s full support for all efforts to uplift the sector.
The event included a mock Executive Council session where pupils discussed key state issues and a quiz competition on the role of social media in nation-building. Traditional dances and songs by NNPP supporters added cultural value to the celebrations.
Yusuf presented ₦100,000 to winners in three categories and awarded ₦500,000 to each coach of the mock Executive Council meeting in recognition of their contributions.
