Kano recommits to polio eradication, targets 3.6 million kids

The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, reiterated the state government’s dedication to eradicating polio and other childhood diseases. The government aims to vaccinate 3.6 million children in collaboration with partners. The governor made this commitment during the launch of the 2024 polio eradication campaign in Dawakin Kudu local government area.

Emphasizing the government’s effort to enhance vaccination coverage, he mentioned plans to work closely with local communities to ensure all children receive vaccinations. The state government will maintain vigilance to promote routine immunization for children, ensuring their well-being and protection.

Governor Yusuf urged parents to ensure their children participate in immunization programs and maintain good hygiene practices. He assured them of the government’s dedication to programs that enhance their welfare.

The Deputy Governor, Aminu Gwarzo, who also serves as the Chairman of the state task force on polio eradication, appreciated partners for their commitment to eradicating polio in Kano and across Nigeria. He reiterated the state government’s willingness to collaborate with donor agencies to eliminate polio.

Dr. Abubakar Yusuf, the state’s Health Commissioner, explained that Dawakin Kudu was chosen for the campaign launch due to its low routine immunization coverage. The World Health Organization’s Country Representative, Dr. Mulombo Walter, through the organization’s State Coordinator, Dr. Mayana Sanusi, mentioned the deployment of field volunteers and monitors to ensure effective vaccination coverage and adherence to guidelines.
