The technical director of karate in Nigeria expressed confidence in the country’s ability to achieve more success internationally following the recent bronze medal victories of Rita Ogene and Israel Jegede at the 11th Commonwealth Karate Championship in Durban, South Africa.
Ogene and Jegede secured bronze medals in their respective weight categories, showcasing Nigeria’s potential in the sport. With five athletes, two coaches, a referee, a board member, and the Secretary-General representing Nigeria at the championship, the country made a strong impression.
The Karate Federation of Nigeria President commended the team’s performance and emphasized the federation’s dedication to nurturing karate talent nationwide. He highlighted the need for continued support and exposure to international competitions to elevate Nigerian karate to a global standard.
Despite a close miss by Constance Abode and Kingsley Fineface in securing bronze medals, the technical director remains hopeful about Nigeria’s prospects in karate. He emphasized the importance of regular participation in international championships and ongoing athlete development for Nigeria to excel in the sport on a global stage.
