Kwara State Governor emphasized the commitment of his administration to support fish farmers in the state with necessary equipment and incentives for their success. The World Fisheries Day event, themed “The economic significance of fishery to the development of Kwara state,” was marked by the Governor’s representative, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development.
The Governor highlighted the importance of the fish sub-sector in job creation and nutrition. He expressed the government’s focus on improving both quantity and quality of fish production in the state. Efforts are underway to assist fish farmers in making their feeds to reduce costs and enhance quality.
The Speaker of the state House of Assembly acknowledged the challenges faced by fish farmers, such as high feed costs impacting production. Despite these challenges, he encouraged farmers to continue adding value to the state’s economy. The government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, is addressing various challenges in fish farming, including aquatic ecosystem issues and climate change.
Stakeholders, including the Director of Fisheries Services, expressed gratitude towards the Governor for supporting the Fisheries Department with new infrastructure. The government’s initiatives aim to ensure sustainable fisheries for food security, poverty alleviation, and overall development in Kwara State.
