The Minister of Labour and Employment, alongside the Housing and Urban Development counterpart, have made a plea to the National Assembly to increase budget allocations for their ministries to effectively carry out their responsibilities.
The Labour Minister emphasized the need for a higher budget allocation in 2025 to enhance the performance of crucial aspects within the ministry’s mandate. Specifically, the funds would be utilized for the renovation, reconstruction, and re-equipping of skills development centers nationwide to facilitate job creation.
It was highlighted that the current budget allocation of N46bn for the ministry and its agencies this year would not suffice to meet the set goals. The focus is on creating skilled jobs through training programs that lead to sustainable employment opportunities, aligning with the government’s agenda on job creation.
The Senate and House Committees on Employment, Labour, and Productivity acknowledged the importance of skill development in fostering economic growth and recommended increased budgetary support for the ministries.
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development also urged the Senate Committee on Housing to allocate more funds for critical housing programs such as the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Housing Programme and Slump Upgrading and Urban Renewal Programme. The initiatives aim to boost economic growth, create job opportunities, and attract investments.
Efforts are being made to address outstanding liabilities within the ministries, with discussions on how to alleviate financial burdens and support ongoing projects. The collaboration between the ministries and the National Assembly reflects a commitment to driving sustainable development and addressing economic challenges.
