Lagos assembly not scrapping LCDAs — Speaker

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, recently addressed the issue surrounding the local council development areas (LCDAs) in the state to clarify any confusion that arose.

A bill was discussed in the assembly proposing the replacement of the existing 37 LCDAs with Area Administrative Councils, which was subject to a public hearing.

Following this, the assembly decided to hold another public hearing on the matter and sought the opinion of the state Attorney-General on a recent Supreme Court ruling regarding financial autonomy for local governments.

The Speaker emphasized that the aim of reviewing the LG Administration law was not to eliminate the LCDAs but to enhance their functionality.

He confirmed the intention to collaborate with the National Assembly to address concerns and ensure proper recognition of the LCDAs as substantive local governments.

Several members of the assembly expressed the necessity of working towards the formal listing of LCDAs, considering the significance of Lagos State in terms of population and economic importance within Nigeria.
