The ongoing crisis within the Lagos State House of Assembly regarding the speakership position seems to be on the path to resolution following the involvement of influential figures within the All Progressives Congress. It is speculated that the ousted Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, and the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, may step down to make way for a new lawmaker to assume leadership in the House.
The intervention by prominent APC members, including former governors like Chief Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode, has been crucial in attempting to find a solution to the political tension at the Lagos Assembly. The delegation, directed by President Bola Tinubu, aims to address the impasse that arose on January 13, 2025, when Obasa was removed as Speaker by 36 lawmakers and replaced by Meranda.
Allegations against Obasa included issues such as poor leadership, lateness to sessions, high-handedness, and misuse of power, among others. Despite Obasa’s insistence on still being the Speaker, the party leaders are considering a new individual, possibly from Lagos West, to take over the position.
One of the potential candidates being discussed is David Setonji, known for his experience and seniority in the House. Setonji, representing Badagry Constituency II, has been a member since 2015 and currently serves as the Chief Whip. The resolution being considered also involves Obasa withdrawing his court case against the Assembly and Meranda.
Overall, the party is engaged in mediating the situation, with hopes of reaching a consensus and restoring stability within the Lagos State House of Assembly.
