Lagos-Calabar highway first phase to be completed by May 2025 – Umahi

The Minister of Works recently announced that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway’s first section is on track to be finished by May 29, 2025. After completion, the highway will be tolled for 5 to 10 years to recoup construction expenses. Construction of this initial 47.7 km segment in Lagos State began in March 2024 by Hitech Construction Company Limited.

During an inspection of the road, the Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress, particularly highlighting the quality of work done by Hitech. The Minister also mentioned plans to develop land along the highway for tourism, factories, and housing to maximize returns on the project.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway aims to reduce the burden on Apapa Wharf by improving cargo handling capacity. The project will also facilitate transportation from key industries like the Dangote Refinery and Fertilizer Plant through the construction of seven axle roads connecting to the Sagamu-Benin Expressway.

This 700-kilometer highway project spans nine states along Nigeria’s coastline, with construction awarded to Hitech Construction Company Ltd. under an Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Financing (EPC+F) arrangement. The Minister anticipates completing the full highway in eight years, with various sections commencing simultaneously once all necessary processes are finalized.
