Lagos community demands compensation for demolished buildings

In Oworonshoki, residents from Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State voiced their discontent over a lack of compensation following a demolition that occurred over a year ago. The state government conducted the demolition in July 2023 to eliminate criminal elements hiding in some structures in the area. Despite this, property owners in the community claim they have not received any compensation.

One property owner, Bashir Olawale, expressed frustration, stating that no compensation has been provided since the demolition took place. Another resident, Jamiu Adekunle, echoed these sentiments, highlighting that no one in the community has been compensated.

Osatohamhen Ebhohon, the Publicity Secretary of the African Action Congress in Lagos, confirmed the lack of compensation for community members during a recent meeting. He emphasized that both young and elderly individuals in the community have been affected by the absence of compensation.

The Lagos State Government clarified its stance on compensation for demolished properties, particularly mentioning that structures built on wetlands or drainage channels are not eligible for compensation. However, they assured that compensation is provided in other cases, citing an example of compensating fire victims in Dosumu.

When questioned about compensation for those impacted by the Oworonshoki demolition, the Commissioner for Information & Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, pledged to investigate the matter further. He emphasized the government’s commitment to considering public opinion and ensuring fair treatment in such situations.
