Lagos silent on school probe months after teacher sodomised pupil

Two months have passed since a 10-year-old student at a school in Egbeda, Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State was reportedly assaulted by a teacher. The Lagos State Government has not yet revealed the outcome of its investigation into the incident. The child’s mother expressed disappointment in the school’s response, claiming they have shown little empathy towards the family.

The accused teacher allegedly deceived the child into accompanying him on the pretext of a spelling bee and art competition with promises of cash prizes and potential overseas travel. The teacher is currently in custody awaiting a court hearing scheduled for January 23, 2025.

Despite assurances of an investigation, details of the government’s inquiry, particularly within the school premises, remain undisclosed. The mother of the victim criticized the school for lack of support, revealing that she had to bear expenses for police transportation and fuel costs. She voiced dissatisfaction with the school’s handling of the situation, including its failure to provide information about the accused teacher.

The school’s proprietress confirmed that the teacher had been detained and was no longer employed by the school. Attempts to seek further information from the school were met with silence. The state Ministry of Education indicated that an investigation would be initiated by the Office of Education Quality Assurance.

The head of the OEQA mentioned that updates on the investigation would be forthcoming. The Ministry of Education assured that appropriate actions would be taken to address the issue.
