Lagos unveils reward scheme for waste recycling

The Lagos State Government is preparing to introduce a new campaign to raise awareness about the circular economy, emphasizing the conversion of waste into valuable resources as a means to enhance the state’s economy. The initiative, named ‘Eco Circulate,’ will kick off in Badagry, starting at St. Thomas Primary School, Agbalata Market Road. The aim is to educate residents about the benefits of embracing the circular economy model throughout Lagos.

This program has the potential to generate thousands of job opportunities, promote entrepreneurship, and significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the state. Participants will be encouraged to engage in waste-to-value projects by offering various incentives such as health insurance, free public transport, food items, cooking fuel, and airtime/data in exchange for recyclable materials like plastic bottles, water sachets, waste oil, e-waste (phones, laptops, appliances), and textile waste. The campaign will be rolled out across all 57 local government areas and council development areas in Lagos.

Earlier this year, the state government launched a pilot community recycling project to enhance waste management and cleanliness. Dr. Omobolaji Gaji, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Environmental Services, highlighted this initiative as part of the administration’s development agenda.
