LASG inspects drainage projects to tackle flooding

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its dedication to addressing the issue of flash flooding and reclaiming the environment from various infringements in the city. The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized the importance of this mission during a media briefing after inspecting drainage projects in the Eti Osa Local Government Area.

Accompanied by key officials, the team visited the Orchid Road/Royal Pine Estate Secondary Collector Construction project. Wahab mentioned ongoing negotiations with residents who had violated drainage systems, offering them options to rectify the situation and prevent discharges into the Ikota River.

Additionally, the team assessed the Bill of Quantity prepared by residents in Ikota GRA (System 44A) to find a compromise regarding infractions hindering the construction of a secondary collector. Residents agreed to fund the project and initiate construction in early January 2025.

Furthermore, adjustments to drainage dimensions were made to accommodate residents while ensuring effective water discharge into the Atlantic. The government also highlighted efforts by the Emergency Flood Abatement Gang to clean drains and reduce flooding risks throughout the local government areas.

Plans are in place to serve evacuation notices to shanties around Kuramo waters to mitigate flash flooding and address security and environmental concerns. The government aims to streamline these areas for better planning and infrastructure development in the future.
