Lawyer seeks IG’s intervention over seized vehicles by cops

A legal practitioner based in Lagos has called for an investigation by the Inspector General of Police into the reported harassment of a retired Nigeria Customs Service officer and the subsequent seizure of his property by officers from the Zone 2 headquarters covering Lagos and Ogun states.

The lawyer emphasized the need for a thorough inquiry into the procedures followed by the officers before and after confiscating the vehicles.

The retired officer recounted an incident where police officers allegedly entered his premises in his absence and took away three Ford caravan buses without a warrant or court order.

His legal representative criticized the officers’ actions as unlawful and questioned the absence of a formal petition or approval for the seizure.

The lawyer highlighted a lack of transparency in the process, noting that the officers failed to provide essential documentation related to the case.

He further raised concerns about the release of the seized vehicle to the complainant’s lawyer on bond, which, according to him, was not handled professionally by the officers.

The lawyer urged the police authorities to ensure accountability and transparency by compelling the previous investigating officers to disclose crucial information related to the case.

Efforts to obtain a response from the spokesperson for Zone 2 regarding the allegations have so far not yielded definitive answers.
