LG autonomy: ICPC threatens action against officials defying Supreme Court judgment

The head of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Dr. Musa Aliyu, has issued a warning regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy. The Supreme Court recently upheld the financial autonomy of Local Governments in Nigeria and rejected the attempts of state governments to dissolve democratically elected local government councils. Aliyu emphasized the importance of political independence for local governments and stated that any state official who defies the Supreme Court decision will face consequences for misconduct and abuse of power.

Speaking at the 6th Annual General Assembly of the Network of Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa, Aliyu highlighted the commission’s commitment to holding key stakeholders accountable and combating corruption. He announced plans for a summit next month to foster collaboration among stakeholders in anti-corruption efforts. Aliyu reiterated that the ICPC is ready to take action against individuals who disregard the Supreme Court’s decision on local government autonomy.

Furthermore, Aliyu discussed the international dimension of corruption and underscored the necessity of joint efforts by countries to address this issue. He praised the objectives and principles of NACIWA as a strong commitment to combating corruption within member states.
