The Commissioner of Police in Benue State has issued a directive to restrict movement within the state on October 5, 2024, in preparation for the upcoming local government elections. The aim of this restriction is to ensure a smooth and fair electoral process by controlling routes and movements that could potentially disrupt the election. Police officers have been deployed to all 23 local government areas to enhance security during the election.
In a statement released by the state police command’s spokesperson, it was emphasized that the deployment of officers is crucial for the security of lives and property during the election period. The Commissioner of Police has instructed all relevant police commanders to secure their respective areas effectively.
Furthermore, officers stationed at polling units, collation centers, and other critical points have been reminded to uphold professionalism and civility in carrying out their responsibilities. The statement also highlighted a restriction of movement within the state from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the election day to maintain control over routes and individuals who may pose a threat to the electoral process.
The Commissioner of Police warned against any form of violence, intimidation, or electoral offenses, stressing a zero-tolerance policy towards such actions. He urged various community leaders and political party heads to counsel their followers against engaging in any violent activities. The public was assured of a peaceful electoral process, with a call for voters to come out and cast their votes without fear of harassment or intimidation.
