LP targets 50,000 members as e-registration begins in Nasarawa

The Nasarawa State chapter of the Labour Party has commenced electronic registration for intending members across the state’s 13 local government areas.

The LP state chairman, Alexander Ombugu, disclosed this to journalists shortly after a meeting involving the party’s State Executive Council members, LGA chairmen, ward chairmen, and political aspirants at the party’s secretariat in Lafia, the state capital, on Sunday.

The development was in line with guidelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission for political parties ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking on the e-registration, Ombugu said the party began registration processes immediately after the 2023 general election but did not capture all the data now required by INEC, including National Identification Numbers and photographs of intending members.

He expressed confidence that the party would register not less than 50,000 members before the official closure of the e-registration portal.

“Because it is now mandatory by INEC, they said we must insert our NIN and photographs, so the Labour Party decided to go back to work.

“We are asking our people to come out and do this e-registration. On short notice, a large number of people came to the secretariat today.

“This is because we are all ready to work for the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 elections. So, I am confident that the party will register more than 50,000 people in Nasarawa State,” he said.

Addressing rumours about the formation of a caretaker committee in the state, Ombugu insisted that there is no such provision in the party’s constitution.

He warned those attempting to cause crises within the party to desist, noting that the matter had been reported to security agencies.

“If anybody tells you that the Labour Party has a faction, that is a lie. We don’t have any faction in the party.

“The issue of the caretaker committee is not even in our constitution. So, anyone parading himself as a caretaker committee chairman or member is trying to cause problems in the party.

“We are therefore calling on our people to be law-abiding citizens and report issues to the appropriate authorities so that they can take necessary action,” he said.

The LP senatorial aspirants for Nasarawa South and Nasarawa West zones, Ayiwulu Baba-Ayiwulu and Shehu Reuben, respectively, assured that they were ready to mobilise members for e-registration to ensure victory for the party in the forthcoming elections.

“I am using myself as an example. I am set to beat anybody contesting with me for the Nasarawa South senatorial district election.

“I am aspiring for the position, and I know that the party is committed to producing quality candidates across the state,” Ayiwulu said.

Speaking, Reuben said, “Some of us as aspirants are young and capable, and we feel that we can do it.

“That is why we are here today to tell Nasarawa people, especially in my zone, Nasarawa West, that we are out for good leadership and effective representation for the masses.”
