Lung detox tea video misleading, not approved, says NAFDAC DG

The Head of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has addressed concerns regarding a product called Lung Detox Tea or Lungitox (Smokers Pride) in a video circulating on social media. Adeyeye clarified that the mentioned product is not registered with NAFDAC and cautioned the public against falling for misleading information.

During a session at the NAFDAC Lagos office, Adeyeye emphasized that the herbal product’s claims in the video, suggesting that smoking can be healthy when used alongside the product, are baseless. She urged people to be cautious and avoid purchasing unregistered or suspicious items.

Adeyeye disclosed that an individual attempted to register an “anti-smoke and lung detox tea” with NAFDAC in 2023 but the application was rejected due to unsupported claims linking the product to improving the health effects of smoking. She stressed that NAFDAC’s primary focus is on safeguarding public health and ensuring that only scientifically proven and safe products are approved for consumption.

The agency strictly adheres to its mandate to assess the safety, quality, and efficacy of all products under its regulation, including food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, bottled water, and chemicals. Adeyeye reiterated that NAFDAC does not tolerate misleading practices that could jeopardize public health and emphasized the importance of substantiating therapeutic claims with scientific evidence.

Adeyeye concluded by stating that NAFDAC is taking legal action to address false allegations of financial misconduct related to the unregistered product. The agency remains committed to upholding public health standards and will pursue legal action against any individual or organization spreading misinformation or making false claims against NAFDAC.
