The police in Enugu State have apprehended a 30-year-old man for the suspected killing of his neighbor’s four-year-old daughter while she was asleep. The incident was reported by the Enugu State Police spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe.
According to the statement released by Ndukwe, the police swiftly responded to a distress call on August 18 at a residence in Nsukka Local Government Area, where the young girl was found dead. The child’s body was taken to the hospital, where she was confirmed deceased by a doctor and her remains were placed in the mortuary.
The suspect was found with the knife used in the crime, along with quantities of suspected hemp and an item believed to be a charm. Investigations revealed that the suspect is originally from Umuagu-Ozalla in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State but was residing in the same compound as the victim’s family.
The suspect confessed to acting alone under the influence of substances like hemp, methamphetamine, and alcoholic beverages. He admitted to being a member of a cult group and disclosed a previous violent incident in 2022 while living in Jos, Plateau State.
The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State condemned the heinous act and assured the victim’s family of justice. The commissioner has instructed the State Criminal Investigation Department to expedite investigations and ensure a swift prosecution.
It is crucial, as emphasized by the commissioner, for residents to be vigilant and aware of their neighbors’ behaviors to prevent tragedies like this from occurring in the future.
