The Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners has expressed appreciation for the House of Representatives’ call to review the price list for medicine and healthcare services under the National Health Insurance Scheme. They believe that a review of drug pricing will benefit Nigerians. The House of Representatives made this decision following a motion by members urging relevant committees to work with the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Health Insurance Authority for a comprehensive review.
The lawmakers emphasized the importance of affordable healthcare for Nigerians, especially considering the economic challenges faced by many. They highlighted that the current price list does not reflect the current market dynamics and exchange rates, making it difficult for vulnerable populations to access necessary medications.
The President of the Association commended the House of Representatives for their sensitivity to the needs of Nigerians, particularly in healthcare. They mentioned ongoing studies by the NHIA consultants to establish proper pricing of services, hoping that providers will not have to suspend services due to inadequate pricing.
The President emphasized the need for a well-managed Health Insurance Scheme that is equitable and adequately funded to ensure optimal healthcare for all Nigerians. They appreciated the intervention of the House of Representatives as a positive step towards addressing the challenges faced by healthcare providers and patients.
In August, the NHIA reported a significant increase in health insurance enrollment rates both nationally and at the state level, indicating progress in efforts to expand healthcare coverage. The Director General highlighted the growth in enrollment figures, surpassing targets and demonstrating the effectiveness of ongoing initiatives in the health insurance sector.
