Mother tackles Lagos school over daughter’s eye injury

A mother, Mrs Charity Obisco, has raised concerns about the lack of support from a school in Lagos after her 10-year-old daughter, Mary, was injured when a classmate stabbed her in the eye.

The incident took place on October 11, 2024, as narrated by Charity to Metro on Sunday. Following the incident, Mary underwent surgery at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, with the expenses covered by the alleged assailant’s mother.

However, Charity expressed disappointment that the school’s management ceased to show interest in Mary’s well-being post-surgery.

She explained, “I received a call from the headmistress informing me about the unfortunate incident involving my daughter. We were initially directed to a hospital and later transferred to LASUTH for surgery to prevent damage to her other eye. Despite the operation being successful, the school representatives have not visited us since.”

Charity mentioned visiting the school in January to address the neglect of her daughter, as doctors warned about the precarious state of Mary’s left eye.

Further complications arose when Charity’s husband tried to discuss the matter with the school, leading to his arrest on allegations of threats.

Regarding the incident, the school owner, Olanike Adeola, referred to it as an accident and stated that they had provided assistance to the injured student. Adeola also mentioned that the teacher was not present during the incident and emphasized the cooperation extended by the alleged assailant’s mother.

Adeola urged Charity to await the investigation’s outcome rather than escalate the matter to authorities, emphasizing the willingness of the alleged assailant’s mother to support and take responsibility for the incident.
