Mpox not new COVID-19, says WHO

The recent mpox outbreak, as stated by the World Health Organization, is distinct from Covid-19 due to existing knowledge about the virus and effective control measures. While further investigation is necessary for the Clade one billion strain that led to the declaration of a public health emergency, the WHO is confident in the ability to contain the spread of mpox. Previously, a PHEIC was declared for the Clade 2b strain affecting specific demographics, which was successfully managed through community engagement, surveillance, case investigation, and vaccination efforts. The WHO emphasized that mpox does not pose the same level of threat as Covid-19 and assured that lockdown measures similar to those for Covid-19 are not warranted in the European region. The primary mode of transmission for mpox is through close skin-to-skin contact, although transmission via droplets may occur during the acute phase of infection. The WHO recommended targeted vaccination for high-risk groups in outbreak situations rather than mass vaccination. Concerns over the rise of Clade 1b cases led to the declaration of an international health emergency.
