MTN Nigeria has recently adjusted the prices of its internet plans to reflect a 50% tariff increase mandated by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Changes include a ₦1,500 monthly plan for 1.8GB, replacing the previous ₦1,000 plan for 1.5GB. Larger plans like the 20GB and 15GB have also seen price adjustments.
The adjustments are not uniform across all plans, with some remaining unchanged to ensure accessibility. SWIFT Networks has followed suit with a 50% increase in internet prices. Airtel and Globacom are yet to implement changes, but Airtel has introduced a flat rate for voice calls.
The NCC approved the tariff hike in response to industry demands, citing sustainability concerns due to inflation and currency devaluation. The telecom sector had maintained unchanged tariffs for 11 years, despite economic challenges. Other operators are expected to adjust their prices in the coming weeks.
The adjustments, effective as of Monday, impact both data and voice plans, with some modifications in validity periods for daily plans. This ongoing story reflects the evolving landscape of telecommunication pricing.
