MTN Nigeria’s $120m 5G investment delivers fastest internet speeds in West and Central Africa

MTN Nigeria has invested significantly in the 5G network, resulting in the fastest download and upload speeds in the West and Central African region, as per the latest Ookla Speedtest Intelligence data.

In the second quarter of 2024, MTN Nigeria achieved a download speed of 95.62 megabits per second (Mbps) and an upload speed of 17.01 Mbps, setting a new record.

This development benefits MTN Nigeria’s 2.6 million 5G subscribers and enhances the telco’s appeal to potential customers. With a 50% share of the country’s telecom market, MTN Nigeria stands out among its competitors in terms of speed and performance.

MTN Nigeria leads other MTN Group subsidiaries in the region in both download and upload speeds, surpassing competitors like Airtel. The telco’s 5G network, launched in September 2022, has expanded rapidly, covering major cities and reaching a significant portion of the population.

According to industry analysts, 5G technology is still in its early stages in most regions, but MTN is committed to expanding its coverage across its footprint. The company aims to continue investing in both 5G and 4G network infrastructure to cater to the growing demand for high-speed internet services.

As of the second quarter of 2024, 5G penetration in Nigeria exceeded that of South Africa, with MTN Nigeria leading the market in terms of network coverage and subscriber base.

Overall, MTN Nigeria’s investment in the 5G network has positioned the company as a leader in the telecommunications industry, providing fast and reliable internet services to its customers across the country.
