Recently, MTN Nigeria adjusted the tariffs of some of its internet plans by 50%, with only four out of the 18 plans being affected. Users raised concerns over some plans experiencing price hikes beyond the approved threshold by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
According to a data pricing document, the adjustments impacted specific plans. For instance, the 2GB hourly bundle was replaced with a 400MB plan for a higher price, representing a 156% increase. Similarly, the 400GB three-month plan saw a 100% price increase, now priced at ₦120,000.
Other changes included a 50% increase in the 2.5GB digital channels-only bundle and a significant 200% increase in the 15GB Digital channels-only bundle. An MTN Nigeria spokesperson explained that the bundles with over 100% increases were previously heavily discounted and are now priced according to market standards.
Out of the 18 internet plans, 13 experienced less than a 40% increase, with the 25GB monthly plan seeing the most significant rise from ₦6,500 to ₦9,000.
