My three-year-old son’s ear affected by Lagos teacher’s repeated slaps – Mother

Speaking with IMOLEAYO OYEDEYI, a mother of a three-year-old child who was assaulted by a teacher at Christ-Miltos Primary School in Lagos recounts the incident and her challenges as a widow since her husband’s passing three years ago.

Could you describe how the incident unfolded?

The incident occurred on January 6, 2025. I am also a teacher at the school, teaching Nursery Two while my son is in Nursery One. While in my class, I overheard the commotion and later saw a video of the incident on a colleague’s phone, which I shared with a friend.

Had there been previous instances of similar behavior from the teacher?

Yes, my son had mentioned being beaten by the teacher before, but I didn’t take it seriously until I saw the video. I shared it with others to raise awareness, as I felt saddened by it.

Did you confront the teacher or report the incident officially?

I did not confront her directly but shared the video with my pastor, who then reported it to the school’s headmistress. I only want justice for my son.

How did the school management react when the video circulated on social media?

The school management was upset as they had prohibited corporal punishment. They had warned against such actions.

There were claims of the teacher’s history of such behavior. Is there truth to this?

Yes, the teacher had a reputation for being harsh with the children.

Had any other parent raised similar complaints before your incident?

I am unsure, but the school had reiterated the need to stop such practices during meetings due to parental complaints.

Was your son hospitalized after the assault?

Yes, he was taken to Ikorodu General Hospital due to ear injuries. We have medical reports from the hospital.

When was the teacher dismissed by the school?

She was dismissed on Tuesday before her subsequent arrest by the police.

There were reports of your phone being confiscated by the school. When did this happen, and was it returned?

My phone was seized on Tuesday due to numerous calls following the video’s circulation, but it was returned on Thursday.

We understand you are a widow. When did you lose your husband?

It has been three years since his passing. I have been the sole provider for my son since then, taking on various odd jobs to make ends meet without owing any tuition fees.
