N1.8bn UBEC fund illegally withdrawn under Kwara ex-gov Ahmed – Witness

During the trial of a former Kwara State Governor and a former Commissioner for Finance, it was revealed that N1.8bn was unlawfully withdrawn from the Universal Basic Education Commission fund. The accused individuals are facing charges of diverting N5.78bn meant for educational development.

An Assistant Director of Finance at UBEC testified that numerous projects were left incomplete or abandoned, despite funds being allocated during the ex-governor’s administration. The witness also mentioned unauthorized withdrawals and lack of response to queries regarding fund usage.

The witness clarified that the defendants were not involved in the financial management of SUBEB, emphasizing the autonomy of SUBEB from the state government. UBEC grants are intended for educational purposes and must be used according to approved plans.

The court proceedings will continue on March 12 and 13, 2025.
