Within a court session in Kwara State, an Assistant Director of Finance at the Universal Basic Education Commission revealed that approximately N5 billion meant for school projects was allegedly misused by the Kwara State Government. The funds were allocated for primary and junior secondary school projects during the tenure of former governor Abdulfatah Ahmed from 2013 to 2015.
Former governor Ahmed and his Finance Commissioner, Ademola Banu, are currently facing trial for the misappropriation of public funds amounting to N5.78 billion. They are accused of diverting money intended for teacher salaries under the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board.
Despite pleading not guilty to the charges, the trial continues, with Prosecution Witness 1, the Assistant Director of Finance, accusing the government of misusing the funds. The witness outlined the intended use of the funds for infrastructural development in schools and the procedures for obtaining grants from the commission.
The witness reported that funds meant for the 2013 project were diverted by the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board, leading to subsequent actions by the commission to recover misused funds. The court adjourned further proceedings to February 17, 2025.
