The Ashaka branch of the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners is urging the intervention of Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, to address the need for a 50% increase in cement freight charges from Ashaka Cement Plc and Lafarge Holcim. The association is concerned about the static freight rates which are no longer sustainable due to rising operational costs amidst the country’s economic challenges. Despite the escalating cost of cement, transport charges have not been adjusted, causing difficulties for transporters in managing increasing expenses, particularly vehicle maintenance due to poor road conditions. NARTO, represented by their lawyer Barrister Luka Haruna, Branch Chairman Buba Dan-Kasa, and Secretary Mohammed Samaila, highlighted the financial strains caused by the continual increase in fuel, gas, and truck maintenance expenses. They expressed disappointment in the management of Ashaka Cement for ignoring their pleas for a review of freight charges despite multiple requests. The transporters have suspended operations for 20 days due to the unchanging freight rates, which they find unsustainable. They are calling for a 50% raise in freight rates to align with current economic circumstances and are urging the state government to establish a committee to assess the actions of Ashaka Cement’s management and to protect the interests of citizens and the transport industry.
