At the onset of 2025, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Adm. Michael Oamen, emphasized the importance of the media in combating misinformation that could mislead the public.
Oamen conveyed this message during a media engagement event held at the Western Naval Command in Lagos.
He highlighted the rapid generation and dissemination of information in today’s world, stressing the need to stay ahead to safeguard national security.
“It is crucial to manage misinformation and prevent minor incidents from escalating unnecessarily,” Oamen stated.
Recognizing the significance of addressing any gaps in information dissemination, Oamen emphasized the importance of engaging with the media within their purview.
He underscored the value of a platform for clarifying misconceptions or misinformation, emphasizing its contribution to national security objectives.
“In addition to our direct involvement, we prioritize our relationship with society, allowing all stakeholders to play a role in enhancing national security,” he added.
Oamen stressed that misinformation and misuse of information did not benefit anyone and that a well-informed society benefits everyone.
Reflecting on the eventful year of 2024, Oamen expressed gratitude for the media’s role in disseminating information about the command’s activities.
Looking ahead to 2025, he highlighted the numerous exercises and initiatives planned by the Western Naval Command, underscoring the importance of media support in informing the public.
