Authorities from the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency took action on Friday by sealing off Cyvillian Garden, a popular relaxation spot located on Abacha Road in Mararaba, Nasarawa State due to excessive noise pollution.
The Director General of NESREA, Dr. Innocent Barikor, expressed that the decision to seal the facility was made after receiving multiple complaints from residents in the area. Despite several notifications, the facility owner failed to address the noise nuisance.
Dr. Christopher Beka, speaking on behalf of Barikor, mentioned, “We followed proper procedures before resorting to sealing off the establishment. Noise levels were measured at various times and found to exceed acceptable limits for a residential area.”
“After issuing warnings in accordance with regulations, we engaged in discussions with the facility to ensure compliance with the National Environmental (Noise Standards and Control) Regulations, 2009,” he added.
Addressing the severity of noise pollution, Beka emphasized, “Noise pollution negatively impacts citizens’ well-being. It is unacceptable for individuals to be deprived of sleep due to excessive noise after a long day. Business operations and recreational activities should not come at the expense of others.”
NESREA remains dedicated to safeguarding the quality of life for Nigerians through robust environmental regulations and enforcement. The agency assured that similar enforcement actions will be conducted across all states in the country.
