The latest initiatives by the Federal Government are set to drive development in the Delta region of Nigeria. During the 2025 ministerial press briefing, Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, unveiled plans for two new regional commissions and various infrastructure projects aimed at transforming the Niger Delta.
Established in October 2024, the Ministry of Regional Development oversees the newly introduced North-West and South-East regional commissions. These commissions are intended to promote development and address regional inequalities nationwide.
The Minister emphasized that despite the restructuring, the Ministry of Niger Delta’s functions have been absorbed into the Ministry of Regional Development. The government remains committed to the Niger Delta’s progress, with completed road projects like the Gberegolor-Ogriagbene Road in Delta State showcasing their dedication to enhancing transportation networks.
In addition to transportation projects, the ministry has made strides in improving essential services like water supply and electricity. Initiatives such as installing solar street lights and community water schemes demonstrate their commitment to enhancing living conditions in the region.
Efforts to boost economic activities include constructing ferry services to connect communities separated by waterways. The ministry has also focused on empowering youth through skills training and financial support to help them establish businesses and secure sustainable livelihoods.
Minister Momoh stressed the importance of peace and stability for economic growth, stating that the Niger Delta’s prosperity is intertwined with the nation’s economic well-being. He expressed optimism that the establishment of the new regional commissions would usher in significant growth and development across Nigeria.
