Niger invites Russian firms to exploit uranium, other resources

Niger is seeking investment from Russian companies in the production of uranium and other natural resources, according to the country’s mining minister. This move comes amid strained relations with France, as French nuclear group Orano recently ceased uranium production in Niger due to conflicts with the military junta in power since July 2023.

The mining minister, Ousmane Abarchi, mentioned that Russian companies have shown interest in exploring and exploiting Niger’s resources, not limited to uranium. He also noted the French government’s stance of not recognizing the Niger authorities, raising questions about the continued exploitation of natural resources by French companies in the country.

Abarchi’s statements reflect a trend in several West African nations reevaluating their relationships with France and turning towards partnerships with Russia and other countries. Niger’s military rulers have expressed intentions to revise regulations governing foreign companies’ mining activities in the country, which is a significant uranium producer globally.

Orano faced challenges following the junta’s withdrawal of a permit for the Imouraren uranium deposit and restrictions on exporting the material due to border closures with Benin for security reasons, as stated by Niamey.

It is apparent that Niger is exploring new avenues for partnerships and investments in its natural resource sector amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics in the region.
