Nigeria, Tanzania forge strong economic ties

The Vice President emphasized the need for stronger cooperation between Nigeria and Tanzania due to their shared goals for continental growth and unity. He highlighted the historic ties between the two countries, particularly in their joint efforts against apartheid and colonialism.

During a meeting with former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the Vice President expressed admiration for Tanzania’s leadership legacy and its role as a beacon of hope and stability in East Africa.

He stressed the importance of enhancing economic and social connections between Nigeria and Tanzania within the African Continental Free Trade Area framework, citing Tanzania’s rapid development due to significant gas reserves.

The Vice President also commended Tanzania’s support for Nigerian businesses operating in the country and highlighted the potential benefits for the entire continent if both Nigeria and Tanzania succeed.

Former President Kikwete, visiting Nigeria for a convocation ceremony at the National Defence College, expressed Tanzania’s willingness to strengthen business and diplomatic relations with Nigeria, emphasizing the commitment to further enhance cooperation between the two nations.

Both leaders discussed the importance of updating agreements and expanding bilateral relations to promote African solidarity. The meeting was attended by officials from both countries, including the Acting Tanzanian High Commissioner in Nigeria, the Director of National and Geo-political Affairs, and representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
