The Lagos State Police Command has clarified that the individuals apprehended at Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park, Ojota, were not participating in a protest as initially reported. The Commissioner of Police, CP Olanrewaju Ishola, stated that the arrests were made proactively to maintain public order and target individuals engaging in provocative behavior aimed at causing unrest.
In a statement released by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, titled “Arrested Persons Not Protesters—CP Ishola,” it was revealed that the police had engaged with protest organizers to discuss the planned demonstration for Nigeria’s Independence Day. The organizers had assured the police of a peaceful protest on October 1, 2024.
Despite the approved protest taking place peacefully with adequate police presence, a group of individuals was arrested at the park on October 2. CP Ishola emphasized that these individuals were inciting trouble and not part of the authorized protest.
Among those arrested were individuals of varying ages, and a Toyota pickup was impounded during the operation. The suspects are facing charges related to conduct likely to cause a breach of peace and will be arraigned accordingly.
The Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of Lagos residents, emphasizing that they will take all necessary steps to maintain public order. These actions are part of heightened security measures in the state following the Independence Day protests.
