NIWA lists human errors, drug use as causes of boat accidents

The Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority highlighted human errors, drug use, and non-compliance with regulations as the primary causes of boat accidents in recent years. This information was shared during a meeting with the House Representatives Committee on NIWA. The director emphasized NIWA’s dedication to ensuring the safety of individuals using water transportation.

He mentioned that most accidents on waterways resulted from human mistakes, with operators often under the influence of drugs, leading to avoidable errors. Additionally, some operators neglect to follow rules and regulations, such as overcrowding boats beyond capacity or not providing necessary safety equipment like life jackets.

The committee chairman, leading the oversight visit, stressed the importance of inland waterways in Nigeria’s transportation system for connectivity, reducing road congestion, and fostering economic growth. He highlighted the significance of addressing challenges like boat accidents, flooding, and the need for improved infrastructure such as inland ports and navigable channels.

Furthermore, the chairman emphasized the importance of dredging waterways to enhance Nigeria’s inland transportation system. He also discussed the necessity for developing human capacity, acquiring operational equipment, and exploring alternative financing options like public-private partnerships to meet NIWA’s infrastructure and capacity building requirements.

In conclusion, the committee is committed to advocating for policies and funding that support national priorities and sustainable development in the inland waterways sector.
