A former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, emphasized that the North is self-sufficient and not reliant on other regions, especially in economic aspects. He stated that all states and regions in Nigeria depend on each other for survival, regardless of their resources.
Ndume highlighted that the North is an asset to Nigeria and not a burden. He dismissed claims that tax reforms target the North, emphasizing that the laws apply equally to all citizens.
Calling for transparency in governance, Ndume urged for efficient management of resources for the benefit of all Nigerians. He criticized the timing of proposed tax reforms and advocated for broader consultations with stakeholders before implementation to prevent exacerbating economic hardships.
Ndume recommended that the Federal Inland Revenue Service focus on expanding the tax base and enhancing collection methods, including seeking more contributions from profitable commercial banks. He also advised the Central Bank of Nigeria to monitor banks to ensure fair tax contributions.
Expressing concerns over proposed tax reforms by President Bola Tinubu, Ndume suggested that governance reforms should precede fiscal changes to address Nigeria’s challenges effectively.
Highlighting significant budget allocations to personnel and recurrent expenditures, Ndume stressed the need for comprehensive government reforms to improve budget implementation and address fiscal issues.
He underscored the necessity of holistic reforms, appropriate timing, and public consensus for successful governance enhancements.
