A committee in the House of Representatives is investigating the issue of certificate racketeering in tertiary institutions and has called on relevant agencies to intensify efforts to address this problem. The committee chairman emphasized the determination of the house to put an end to this practice.
The committee, composed of members from various relevant committees, is planning a public investigative hearing on the matter. This investigation was initiated following a motion based on an allegation by a journalist who obtained a degree certificate within six months from a university in Benin Republic and then enrolled for NYSC service in Nigeria.
The committee has reached out to different organizations, including the Ministry of Education, NUC, Committee of Vice Chancellors, and others, to gather information for the hearing. The goal is to take serious action to combat certificate racketeering effectively.
The newly appointed Executive Secretary of the Nigerian University Commission expressed a commitment to ensuring quality education in the country. He highlighted the importance of access to education and the need to maintain high educational standards to achieve national goals.
