During a session at the Nigerian Bar Association conference in Lagos, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr Ola Olukoyede, emphasized the agency’s commitment to treating all individuals, including suspects and legal practitioners, with respect and fairness. Olukoyede assured attendees that under his leadership, everyone interacting with the EFCC would be handled with dignity, regardless of the situation.
He urged lawyers to cooperate with the EFCC in cases involving financial crimes, emphasizing the importance of providing relevant information and assistance. Olukoyede also called for legislative measures to enhance the whistleblower policy, ensuring protection for informants who come forward with valuable information.
Regarding delayed prosecutions, Olukoyede reiterated the EFCC’s dedication to pursuing cases to completion while upholding legal standards. He stressed the agency’s responsibility to investigate and prosecute financial crimes, highlighting the significance of cooperation among law enforcement bodies.
Olukoyede outlined plans to improve the EFCC’s infrastructure and expertise for more effective case analysis. He underscored the importance of collaborating with various organizations in combating financial crimes.
Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), the outgoing NBA President, echoed Olukoyede’s call for collaboration and reminded legal professionals to adhere strictly to the Money Laundering Act in their practices.
Human rights activist Mike Ezekhome (SAN) recommended that the EFCC adhere to international standards, emphasizing the importance of thorough investigations before arrests and public disclosures.
