A man carried out a stabbing spree in France, resulting in one death and multiple injuries, confirmed by President Emmanuel Macron as an “Islamist terrorist act.” The perpetrator, a 37-year-old Algerian-born individual, was on a terrorism watchlist and faced deportation orders. Despite repeated attempts by France to expel him, Algeria declined cooperation.
The attack took place in Mulhouse near a bustling market while a demonstration supporting the Democratic Republic of Congo was ongoing. The incident caused casualties among bystanders and law enforcement officers, with two officers sustaining serious injuries. The suspect was apprehended at the scene and was reported to have a history of mental health issues by Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau.
During the assault, the assailant was heard yelling “Allahu Akbar,” a phrase associated with Islamic extremism. President Macron unequivocally labeled the event as an “Islamist terrorist act” and pledged to combat terrorism within the country.
The incident is under investigation by authorities for murder and attempted murder linked to a terrorist agenda. The suspect’s presence on the FSPRT terrorist watchlist, which was established after previous terrorist attacks in France, underscores the ongoing threat of radicalization.
As night fell, law enforcement officials continued their investigative work at the crime scene in Mulhouse. Political figures expressed condolences and solidarity with the victims, emphasizing the need to address the root causes of such acts of terrorism.
France has faced a series of similar attacks in recent times, highlighting the persistent challenge of combating extremist violence within the country.
