Onuachu in fitness race for Chelsea showdown

Southampton manager Russell Martin is feeling positive about the possibility of Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu being ready for selection when Southampton faces Chelsea today.

Martin decided to rest Onuachu during the Brighton game to avoid any further issues, although he contemplated including him in the squad.

The Saints’ manager is hopeful that Onuachu, who received praise for his performance against Liverpool in his first start of the season, will be fit to play against Chelsea.

“We’re optimistic that Paul will be able to play on Wednesday, which would be beneficial for us,” Martin mentioned.

Onuachu made a good impression during his 52-minute appearance against Liverpool, demonstrating glimpses of his scoring abilities that were evident during his time in Turkey.

Although the 30-year-old joined Southampton in 2023, he spent the previous season on loan at Trabzonspor, where he scored an impressive 17 goals and provided four assists in 25 matches, aiding the Turkish team in securing European football.

Despite his success abroad, Onuachu is still chasing his first goal or assist for Southampton after featuring in 19 matches for the club.

His potential return would be a timely boost for Martin as Southampton prepares to face a strong Chelsea team currently in second place in the Premier League standings.

Onuachu’s nomination for the FIFA Puskás Award adds to his allure, with one of his remarkable goals for Trabzonspor being acknowledged for its acrobatic brilliance.

If he plays, Onuachu could provide Southampton with a crucial advantage in what is expected to be a tough match.
