The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency is set to resume the collection of a $300 landing fee from helicopter operators in the country. This decision has been met with opposition from industry operators, who have threatened legal action against the agency if the fee is enforced. The Director of Air Traffic Services at NAMA stated that the fee would help alleviate the agency’s financial challenges.
Although the fee collection had been suspended in the past due to government intervention, NAMA is now determined to reinstate it. The exact date of implementation was not provided during the announcement.
The initial introduction of the fee had sparked controversy, with industry experts questioning its necessity. The Airline Operators of Nigeria rejected the fee, arguing that there was no legal basis for its enforcement. They emphasized that NAMA’s primary role is to provide navigation services for aircraft operations.
Despite the opposition, NAMA defended the fee reintroduction, citing the high costs associated with providing necessary services and maintaining infrastructure. Financial constraints, including budget limitations and revenue collection issues, have hindered the agency’s ability to modernize equipment and provide adequate training for personnel.
The Managing Director of Aero Contractors expressed strong opposition to the fee, stating that legal action would be pursued if it is enforced. He criticized the lack of stakeholder consultation and proper procedures in introducing the charge, highlighting the potential negative impact on the aviation industry and the economy at large.
