Recent complaints by Lagos residents have sparked criticism from the Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party towards the All Progressives Congress-led Lagos State Government regarding reports of unpleasant odors in various parts of the state. The criticism arose after residents shared concerns about foul smells in different areas of Lagos on social media platforms. Discussions about the hygienic conditions in certain locations of Lagos have been prevalent on social media recently.
A National Youth Service Corps member in Lagos, Ushie Uguamaye, referred to Lagos as a ‘smelling state,’ triggering discussions online. Following her remarks, other Lagos residents also expressed their observations about the odor issue in the state.
Concerns were raised about specific locations like Iyana Iba, Igando Oko Filling, Ojota, and the Ajah under bridge. The Deputy Chairman of the Lagos PDP, Tai Benedict, called on the state government to promptly address the problem to safeguard public health.
In response, the 2023 Lagos State Governorship Candidate of the Labour Party suggested implementing proper waste management practices and avoiding landfills in the city center. He recommended solutions such as using organic biofilters to convert organic waste and enhancing air quality by planting more trees.
The Lagos APC Spokesperson dismissed the criticism from opposition parties, accusing them of playing politics instead of offering constructive solutions. Despite this, he acknowledged the need for the government to address the concerns raised by residents.
