Opposition scheming to stop Oyebanji from breaking Ekiti two-term barrier

The political climate in Ekiti State is heating up as the 2026 governorship election approaches, with the All Progressives Congress (APC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gearing up for the contest. While the opposition parties advocate against governors seeking re-election, the ruling APC is determined to support Governor Biodun Oyebanji in his bid for a second term without a break in between.

Oyebanji’s performance has garnered widespread support, with various groups, leaders, and communities endorsing him for another four years in office. Despite the endorsements, the governor has remained silent on his re-election plans.

On the flip side, the SDP and PDP have criticized the endorsements, questioning Oyebanji’s achievements and suggesting that the support might lead to complacency. They are actively strategizing and preparing to contest the 2026 election, highlighting areas where they believe Oyebanji’s administration is lacking.

The APC, on the other hand, maintains unwavering support for Oyebanji, dismissing the opposition’s criticisms as mere disdain for the ruling party. They cite Oyebanji’s performance and the people’s approval as valid reasons for backing his second-term bid, aiming to create a continuity of governance with Oyebanji’s re-election.
