A representative for the former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Mr. Laolu Akande, has refuted rumors suggesting Osinbajo’s departure from politics or resignation from the All Progressives Congress.
Akande, a previous Senior Special Assistant on Media & Publicity to Osinbajo, affirmed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
Since stepping down from office in 2023, Osinbajo has been less involved in political affairs, leading to speculation about his standing within the APC and political engagements.
Osinbajo participated in the APC primary in 2022 but was unsuccessful in securing the party’s nomination, which was clinched by President Bola Tinubu.
Prior to this, Osinbajo held positions such as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 under the governorship of Tinubu.
Various political analysts attribute Osinbajo’s reduced political involvement to his defeat in the APC primary, while others suggest his focus has shifted towards his role as Global Advisor for the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet.
When questioned by NAN regarding Osinbajo’s political standing, Akande declined to offer personal opinions on Osinbajo’s decisions.
He reiterated that Osinbajo has not indicated any intention to exit politics and, to the best of his knowledge, remains a member of the APC.
Akande also mentioned that Osinbajo would participate in any APC functions requiring his presence.
“I prefer not to involve Osinbajo in my personal remarks, but there is no evidence to suggest his departure from the APC. He is still a member of the party.
“If he receives an invitation to party gatherings, he will attend. I have no information about him leaving the party,” Akande stated.
