The Governor of Abia State has expressed his commitment to partnering with regional and international development organizations to advance his government’s infrastructure agenda within the state. He recently announced the commencement of the construction of the 19.1-kilometer Itungwa – Omoba – Amaise – Amairi – Mgboko – Ahiaba Ubi – Nkwo Elechi Road, initiated under the Rural Access Agricultural Marketing Project.
Governor Otti confirmed the allocation of N600 million as counterpart funding for the project and approved an additional N2.6 billion to ensure the smooth execution of the initiative and minimize delays. This road project marks the pilot phase of the project, with plans to extend further contracts for road construction totaling 256 kilometers across different areas of the state before the year concludes.
The Governor highlighted the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project as a crucial framework for enhancing rural community economic growth, focusing on constructing roads that link major agricultural zones and markets. He emphasized the significance of supporting the agricultural value chain to address food insecurity, unemployment, poverty, and rural-urban migration challenges within the state.
Acknowledging the World Bank’s support in realizing the project, Governor Otti pledged to construct roads of high standards to facilitate increased economic activities within the communities. Other officials and stakeholders also commended the Governor’s dedication to infrastructural development and the positive impact of the project on the lives of rural residents and farmers. The contractor handling the project assured quality delivery within a reduced completion timeline, involving community members in the project implementation.
Local leaders and representatives praised the Governor’s initiative in addressing infrastructural needs, emphasizing the economic benefits of the road project. Members of the Cooperative Motor Union appreciated the Governor’s efforts in improving road infrastructure, recognizing the positive impact on their businesses.
