Concerns have been raised by residents of Apete, Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State about a waste disposal truck left abandoned on a busy road in the neighborhood.
The lingering odor from the vehicle, present for two days following an accident, poses significant health risks to the community.
Residents are troubled by the health hazards in the area since the incident occurred on Tuesday.
Despite efforts to cover the refuse, the truck continues to emit a foul smell, making the environment uncomfortable for residents and passersby.
The truck, missing a tire, is filled with refuse, spreading an unbearable stench throughout the neighborhood.
Many residents had to cover their noses while passing by, and some businesses in the area had to close temporarily.
Despite the discomfort, some shop owners and employees are wearing face masks to cope with the unpleasant smell.
A resident, Ajoke Saheed, expressed frustration, stating, “The situation is becoming intolerable. The authorities have not removed the vehicle since the accident, and it is causing distress to everyone.”
A commercial motorcyclist, Opeoluwa Ajani, highlighted the health risks posed by the foul smell and emphasized the community’s concern.
“In these challenging times, falling ill is the last thing we need. We should focus on earning a living, not dealing with health issues. The government needs to act swiftly to clear the truck,” he urged.
A roadside trader, Faranmi Oladele, shared worries about the truck’s contents, saying, “I fear what else might be inside that vehicle because of the strong smell. I had to relocate my stall to avoid the odor.”
Residents are calling on the state government to promptly address the situation.
Responding in an interview, the Director of Operations at the Oyo State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Nureni Kabiru, assured residents that the truck would be removed soon.
He clarified that the truck did not belong to the state government but to a consultant, and efforts were underway to repair and remove it within a few hours.
